Not long ago, there were only 22 California condors left in the wild. Today, thanks in large part to the work of Ventana Wildlife Society (VWS), that number has grown steadily.
Headquartered in Monterey County, VWS leads one of the most successful wildlife recovery programs in the country.
Ventana Wildlife Society’s work includes:
Releasing and monitoring wild condors in Big Sur and Central California
Educating hunters and ranchers about the dangers of lead ammunition, which causes fatal poisoning in scavenger species
Vaccinating the condor population to guard against threats like avian flu
Conducting extensive field research to inform long-term recovery strategies

Meet UnChained: Empowering Youth, One Dog at a Time
UnChained is a Santa Cruz–based nonprofit transforming lives—human and canine alike.
Their mission is simple but profound: pair vulnerable youth with shelter dogs in need of training, trust, and companionship. Through hands-on dog training programs, UnChained helps teens build empathy, patience, and responsibility, while giving rescue dogs the tools they need to find forever homes.
